The cxcuso that he was a stranger to New Zealand and did not know he •was committing an offence was contained in a letter to the magistrate by Bernard Kooreroan, watchmaker and jeweller, charged on summons, in the Police Court to-day, with carrying on the business of a second-hand dealer without a license. Detective Brady said,defendant bought a ring for 8/ from a boy of 11. Defendant explained that the boy stated that his mother sent him to sell the ring, and defendant thought it was a genuine case of hardship. Later lie removed the sapphires and sold the gold as old gold. Kooreroan was convicted and ordered to pay the costs, 10/.
