DEVONPORT WATER.

Why is it that so many of the letters on the Devonport water question start off with the best of intentions and drift to the petty habit of abusing another person? From letters can any logical conclusion be arrived at? Has any reliable information been gleaned from what has been written? Everybody knows that the water on the North Shore is decidedly bad, but for three months teams of writers have informed' John Public of this fact. On all sides one hears, "Did you read so and so's letter? It's a beauty." The question ha.* lost its seriousness, and merely affords comic relief. Xo mention of what condition the pipes arc in that fleed the houses. No analysis of what the real trouble is with the water. Nothing but attacks with the pen, and counter attacks. John Public sits by and grins, and wonders what ail this filtration, question is about. The papers showed beautiful pictures of the plant. John saw them, too, but wonders how it works. He knows it co?t about £6000 because he is taxed with it. John is living in a wave of talk, n condition that has ruined nations. The only thing one is sure about is the water rate demand. There is no talk about that, it is in plain writing with no excuses, and because it i* not talk John pays up. I. SJ'ILLEIt.
