Donolioe. the two New South Wales tennis players, opened their tour of Auckland Province at Ilclensville yesterday In line weather. There was a good attendance to see these two clever young Australians in action. Singles and doubles were played against A. K. Turner and M. T. Wilson, Auckland, the Australians winning all matches. The line piny of the visitors was much appreciated by the spectators. Results :— Singles.—Spronle beat Turner. o—4, G—3 : Donohoe beat Wilson, 6—4, C—2. Ladies' -Singles.—Miss S. Errls (Christchurch) beat Miss Jean Ramsay (Auckland, 3—o, ti—4, U—2. Andrews (102 C and 10U2 Xew Zealand champion) and Miss Marjorie Jlacfarlane (102S Dominion title holder). TARANAKI TITLES. (By Telegraphy—Press Association.) NEW I'LYMOUTII, this day. Tennis of a consistently high standard was witnessed during yesterday's play of the Taranakl championships, In which C. E. Mnlfroy, the New Zealand champion, will defend his provincial title. R. Howe and S. Fernandez (Wellington) were both put out of the handicap singles. Paired, they were beaten 1» the championship doubles by Tompkins and Mac Allan (New Plymouth). The third round of the championship saw the downfall of C. B. Webster, for years Taranaki's best player. E. Dickie, a young exponent from Waverley, triumphed in straight acts by virtue of his steadiness. The best match of the day was the singles between ' Mrs. Adams (Eltham), the 19_'ti New Zealand singles and 1f!32 doubles champion, and Miss N. Welch (New Plymouth). Mrs. Adams' experience was a great factor in her win. A large, gallery watched the match, which at times was brilliant. Miss B. Griffiths (Auckland) is the only woman player so far with the courage to play in shorts.

Tilden (nged 41) defeated Ellsworth Vines (aged 22), who was making his debut as a professional, in 1 throe straight sets, S—o, G —3. C—2. Both players were nervous at the start and fell into errors frequently, but Tilden steadied quiekly. Tlis scorching backhand was reminiscent of his form when amateur champion, often forcing Vines to volley out of the court. Vines won the plaudits of the crowd by his brave exhibition In the first set. when the score stood at 4—l in favour of Tilden. Hitting savagely. Vines won the next three games.
