JEWEL THIEVES.

BOYS . SENTENCED. "HAUL" VALUED AT £111. SOLD TO GOLD BUYERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. The necessity for an amendment to the law governing gold buyers, to prohibit purchasing from persons under 21 years uf age, and also to compel buyers to retain their purchases for a certain period before smelting, was stressed by Mr. H. W. Bundle, S.M., in the Children's Court, when two boys were charged with entering a house and stealing jewellery valued at £111. Jewellery valued at only £24 has been recovered. When some gold articles were sold to them, two gold buyers communicated with the police. A Christchurch buyer gave the youths £1 5/ for a ring valued at £40. On the same day the buyer resold the ring, which has not been recovered. The police said they were not satisfied with that transaction. One of the youths also pleaded guilty to the theft of jewellery valued at £27 from another residence. He could give no explanation as to where the jewellery disappeared. Both youths were recently convicted in the Children's Court at Christchurch and committed to a Borstal institute for three years. Mr. Bundle imposed a similar term, to be served concurrcnt with the Christchurch sentence.
