OPPOSITION.
LABOUR WARNING.
OFFICIAL ATTITUDE.
Sir Stafford Cripps Refers to
Buckingham Palace.
"MEANT IN GENERAL SENSE." (T'nited V. A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, January 7. "Undoubtedly the Labour party will have to overcome opposition from Buckingham Palace and other places when it comes into power," Sir Stafford Cripps, a Labour leader, told the annual conference of the University Labour Federation. Hβ added: "Labour must act rapidly, and it will be necessary to deal with the House of Lords and also tho city of London's influence. "There must be no time to allow forces outside to assemble and influence the Legislature before the keypoints of Capitalism, namely, land and finance, are transferred to the control of the State."
Keferring to the possibility of war, Bir Stafford said: "If we intend making a general strike a constructive or destructive part of our policy, we must organise elaborate machinery within the trade unions. This was shown to be necessary in 1920. We must also be prepared to deal with the subsequent situation, assuming that the strike ia going to achieve its aims." The "Sunday Dispatch" states that even his Socialist colleagues are angered by Sir Stafford's disgraceful and foolish outburst. Mr. J. R. Clynes, former Home Secretary, said there are too many people speaking on the Labour policy,- which, after all, is clearly set out in the party's constitution. Sir Stafford Cripps told the "Sunday Express" that he did not imply opposition from the Crown. He had used the words, "Buckingham Palace," in a general sense as meaning entourage. Following widespread criticism Sir Stafford Cripps explains the ' misconception of what he intended to convey in his use of the term "Buckingham Palace." "He adds: "It is a well-known expression describing Court circles and officials surrounding the Crown. I cannot understand why anyone thought I was referring to the King. One always assumes complete impartiality of the Crown, which is a basic assumption of our constitution."
