NORTH SHORE WATER.
A prominent American citizen is evidently amazed at -the patience and endurance of North Shore residents as regards toleration of existing unsatisfactory water supply. However, the reason that the people have not hitherto taken intelligent action in connection with the elimination, of "iPupuke pong" is that they have been systematically misled ae regards methods adopted in connection with the purification of Lake Pupuke water. Approximately £6000 has been recently spent in constructing a settling tank, which should have been applied in connection with, the installation of a Candy filtration plant. Considering the amount of putrid protozoa and chemicals delivered throughout the reticulation systems-, it is no wonder that several medical men are kept going day and night. Now the Devonport Council ie trying to induce Nortbcote and Takapuna to join hands with a view, of retaining the lake as a permanent reservoir, to be augmented from the Wairau swamp. If Northcote and Takapuna councils are wise, however, they will foilow Birkenhead's lead and negotiate with the City Council. North Shore and adjoining bays, on account of their unique positions, are too valuable ae health and tourist resorts to be continually spoilt by a putrid water supply. J, GUINTVEN, Mayor of Takapuna.
