EFFORT TO SAVE FRIEND.

TWICE DRAGGED UNDER.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, this day. At the inquest on Saturday concerning the death of Ivanhoe Harold Baigent (16), who was drowned in a pool at Patumahoe, the coroner, Mr. C. K. Lawrie, commended Ronald Fraser Coates (13) on his strenuous efforts to eave his friend. Giving evidence, the boy Coates described how they had swum about and Baigent had complained of tiredness. When they were swimming back across the pool, the deceased had again eaid he was tired and witness went to his assistance. Deceased clasped him round the waist and dragged him under twice. He then swam for the bank and heard deceased call for help. Witness ran and called his brother and sister.

A verdict of accidental death was returned.
