FIRE AT MAIRANGI.
SETTLEMENT ENDANGERED.
Fanned by a strong breeze, a scrub fire threatened 'the settlement at Mairangi Bay yesterday afternoon, and upwards of 100 residents and visitors were organised into fire-fighting units to hold it in check. When the fire was first noticed, about 4.30 p.m., a break was cut between it and the settlement, and as the flames reached this they were checked by a bucket gang and other workers armed with long branches of tea-tree. Meanwhile the occupants of the nearest cottages carried their furniture and belongings up the road, in case the fire should break through, as at times the flames shot 30 feet high. The squads managed to keep the edges of the burn under control, though it reached to within! a. few feet of one building. About three acres was swept by the outbreak.
