BISHOP OF NELSON.
CANON W. G. HILLIARD
NOMINATION ACCEPTED. OUTSTANDING FBEACHEB. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) NELSON, this day. At present headmaster of Trinity Grammar School, Dulwich, Sydney, Canon W. G. Hilliard has accepted nomination as Bishop of Nelson, in succession to Bishop Sadlier, who has retired. Advice to this effect has been received by Archdeacon Cowie, Arr.hbishop's commissary. Before his ordination Canon Hilliard, who is 40 years of age, and the father of several children, was a State school teacher. He was ordained in 1911 after completing his university course, and became curate at Holy Trinity, Dulwich Hill, the present Bishop of Tanganyika (East Africa) then being the vicar. He was appointed headmaster of Trinity Grammar School soon after it was founded. He was also appointed missioner to the men's industrial mission zone, Sydney, and lecturer at the Moore Theological College, Sydney, and in 1916 became rector of St. John's, Ashfield. Here he remained for ten years, doing splendid parish work. Canon Hilliard is considered to be one of the best preachers in the Sydney diocese. He was rector of St. Clement's, Marrickville, from 1920 to 1929, in the latter year succeeding Dr. Weeks, formerly Dean of Nelson, as headmaster once more of Trinity Grammar School, which by this time had grown to be a big public school, and he has been there ever sJnce. The bishop-elect is considered to be one of the outstanding younger men of the diocese of Sydney. He was nominated for the Archbishopric of Sydney. He is described as a convinced evangelical of broad and tolerant sympathy. Commendations of his work and ability were received from two Australian bishops and other leading Australian clergy and laity, and all expressed the opinion that if the diocese of Nelson secured him as the successor to Bishop Sadlier it would be a very fine choice.
