MODEL OF SPEECH.
ENGLISHMEN "APPALLING."
LONDON, January 3
Mr. Bernard Shaw, who is chairman of the British Broadcasting Corporation pronunciation committee, admits that it is a cause for controversy that no member of the committee is an Englishman, reports the "Sketch."
Any such body must exclude Englishmen, he says. The foreigner speaks English, because he has had to learn it, and the Irishman, Scotsman and Welshman, because he has approached it as a language; but the Englishman is shocking and appalling. Hβ breaks every rule and drops syllables. The only exception is the King, .who speaks perfectly, as hearers of his Christmas broadcast are aware.
