RAIN AT CHRISTCHURCH.
ANGAS MEETING SPROULE.
STURT TO TACKLE MALFROY.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The New Zealand lawn tennis championships were continued at Wilding Park thia morning, but in the early afternoon play was abandoned for the day owing to heavy rain falling. The weather in the morning had been overcast. Several interesting matches were witnessed in the women's singles contest in the morning, but heavy rain at 2 o'clock stopped play. In the fourth round match of the men's singles between C. Sproule (New South Wales) and C. Angas, the Canterbury champion, Sproule had won the first set, 6 —3, and was leading I—o in the second set when play was stopped. In the fourth round of the women'e singles in the match between Miss M. Hall (New South Wales) and Miss L. Bickerton (New South Wales), Miss Bickerton was leading 4 —3 in the first set when playwas stopped. After an hour's wait the downpour continued and the officials decided to abandon play for the day. Included in the matches postponed were: —Andrews v. Dymond, Donohoe v. Barnett and Malfroy v. Sturt. These players will probably meet on Thursday morning to decide the semi-finalists in the men's singles. In the women's singles Miss Marjorie Macfarlane, of Auckland, created a emprise by defeating Miss D. Nicholls, of Wellington, the title-holder, in two sets. The slightly heavy courts seemed to upset the Wellington player. Good form was shown by Miss T. Poole (Canterbury) in her quarter-final match with Miss U. Valkenburg (New South Wales). The conditions suited the solid driving of the Christchureh player, but the Australian shortened her game after losing the first set and forced Miss Poole into errors. Acting on medical advice Miss D. Dingle (New South Wales) withdrew from her matches because of an injured thumb. To-day's matches resulted: — LADILJ' SINGLES. Third Round.—Miss M. Wake (Canterbury) beat Miss E. Kudkin (Canterbury), 6—4, 5—7, B—6. Fourth Round.—Miss U. Valkenburg (New South Wales) beat Miss T. Poole (Canterbury), 2—6, 6—l, 6—4; Miss M. Macfarlane (Auckland) beat Miss D. Nicholls (Wellington), B—6, 6—3. LADIES' DOUBLES. Third Round.—Mrs. D. Carl and Miss B. Gould (Canterbury) won from Misses D Dingle and U. Valkenburg (New South Wales) by'default.
