TERRIFIC DELUGE. OVER 20 LIVES LOST. Many Trapped in Overturned Cars. LOS ANGELES RAIN STORM. (It. ited P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright' (Received 11.30 a.m.) LOS AXGELES, January 1. Twenty-three people were drowned -when a terrific rain storm turned the streets of many sections of the city into rivers and washed away 12 bridges. The Los Angeles River was flooded in many sections, when 8.24 inches of rain fell in the space of 30 hours. Most of the deaths resulted from persons being trapped in overturned automobiles, which were washed down the river. One automobile, containing six persons, plunged into the river when the driver could not see a bridge, and was swept away. Many bodies were found by rescue workers, who searched, the debi .s-strewn areas surrounding Los Angeles.
Seven more deaths, occurred in traffic accidents, and more than IUU people were injured.
Thousands were driven from their homes by raging flood waters, which swept every section of the metropolitan area.
