RANKING OF AUCKLAND POST OFFICE.
May I draw your attention to an error contained in your article in your issue of the 21st inst. about the mailroom, G.P.O.—one which is repeatedly made in the local Press and by the public generally? The error lies in designating the Auckland Post Office as "G.P.O."—General Post Office. The correct designation, or grading, is Chief Post Office (C.P.0.). There is only one General Post Office in New Zealand, and that is the head office of the Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington. This is quite distinct from the Chief Post Office, Wellington, which is on all fours with the Chief Post Office, Auckland, and is the office wherein .the public do their ordinary business—'buy stamps, register letters, send telegrams, etc. Except that the General Post Office and the Chief Post Office, Wellington, | happen to be in the same building the one is as distinct from the other as the General Post Office, Wellington, is from the Chief Past Office, Auckland. On one occasion I explained to an Aucklander these distinctions in grades, and the comment was, "If Wellington has got a General Post Office so ought Auckland to have one, and I am going to continue calling our office a G.P.0." The old rivalry again! However, I feel, sure your paper does not desire to continue 111 error in respect of this matter, EX-C.P.O.
