COME OFF IX BOTH INNINGS,

(By Telegraph.—Press Association )

WELLINGTON, Monday

Bright sunshine, with a fresh northerly, were the conditions for the commencement of the Auckland-Wellington Phinket Shield match at the Basin Reserve on Saturday morning. Postles was fortunate in winning the toss from ■Janice, allowing Auckland first use of ft batsman's wicket, with a fast outfield. After the Auckland captain (21) had ."one with the total at 40, Whitelaw 7.59) and H. G. Vivian (04) added 111 for the second wicket. When the former was dismissed the •score was 151. Weir eainc in, but lost Vivian without any addition to the 'ecore as the result of a good slips catch. He applied the bat freely, but hie strokes were sometimes faulty. He jiit nine fours. 131 —3—04. Wallace started very promisingly, and he and Weir batted attractively, carrying the total to 200 for 184 minutes' play. Bluiidell then bowled into tie wind, Morgan taking a eiuart catch at short leg to dismiss Wallace. Wallace showed "real class, and hit two fours. :200—4—27. Cleave had a brief etay, clever stumping by James accounting for him. 208—5—1. Weir punished Morgan, but miseed a wrong 'un, going leg before. His was a good knock, occupying 50 minutes. He hit four fours. 214—6—34. Garrard and Bush forced the pace until the last-named fell to a short-leg trap. 220—7—9. Matheson immediately went the same way. 229—8—0. • A proper rot had now set in, and ■Garrard was caught behind. 229—9—6. The innings closed at 3.40 p.m. for :233. Recovery After Slump. Although Wellington's early batemen failed badly as the side lost five wickets for 81, the tail wagged to some purpose, and Blundell and Freeman shaped so 6oundly that there was reasonable hopes that Auckland's total would be exceeded. When Wellington's innings started, Crook was missed off C'loverley's flrst ball. Dustin went leg before to Matheson. with only a dozen on the board. Edmonds was struck by a ball from Matheeon, causing a stoppage. Tindill also went quickly—caught behind. Wellington continued to find progress •difficult, receiving a further setback "when Crook was caught at forward leg. 29—3—13. . Ell joined O'Brien, who was batting confidently, and started well. Christmas Day's Play. When play recommenced to-day Ell, ■who was 31 not out, was partnered by Xamason, and runs were coming quicker •than on the first day, 43 being put on an 20 minutes. A splendid innings by Ell closed when he hit Garrard towards the boundary, where Cleave brought off a beautiful catch. Lamason scored the first sixer of the match when he lifted the same bowler over; the'fence, but he missed the next, and was clean bowled. He had batted forcefully' for his 20 rune. James and Newman were then together, and an appeal against the firstJianicd for a catch behind the wickets was not sustained when he was eight The partnership realised 30 runs before Newman was bowled by Cleverley, who had then taken three wickets for 46. Blundell followed, and when he lost James, who was caught in the outfield, nine wickets were down for 183. Freeman arrived, and Blundell started laying on the wood, amid applause. They put on 26 between them before Freeman was run out in attempting to score a couple. The total was 209. Parnell "Stars" Shine Again. Auckland's second knock wae commenced by Whitelaw and Postles, and ten came up in even time. At 12 Newman took over the bowling and dismissed Postles in his second over, Crook accepting a catch in the slips. Vivian iilled the gap, and, like his partner, he was very quiet. Twenty-five runs were scored after 45 minutes. Jamee dropped Vivian when he had scored two. Play continued very quietly, and at the end of an hour's play 30 runs were on the board, Whitelaw being 11 and Vivian 5. Another catch was dropped by James, this time Whitelaw giving the chance after scoring 15. Nine of the 32 overs sent down so far were maidens. When the total was 73, Whitelaw hit up a ball, but Freeman and Lamason made a poor effort to take the catch. Two were down for 115 when Ell held a catch from Vivian in the -slips. Vivian had scored 47 in 115 minutes. At stumps the total was IIS for two -..wickets, Whitelaw being 49 and Weir one. The attendance was larger than on the first day.
