MOUNTAINEERING.
A German professor has calculated that a man who weighs 12 stone, and who climbs a mountain 7000 ft high in five hours, expends in energy a force which would be enough to raise over 1,380,0221b to a height of one foot. The work is thus divided: The legs do enough to raise to the height of one foot about 525 tons; the heart does enough work to raise to the height of one foot about five tons; the chest muscles do enough work to raise to the height of one foot about 13J tons, and the other muscles of the body do enough work to raise to the height of one foot about 76 tons. The total work done is enough to raise the man's own body to a height of about 8215 ft if it were all expended directly upon a single object.
