FLAG ETIQUETTE.
There is a certain code of flag etiquette which should be observed by yachtsmen. Unfortunately, few take an interest in such matters, but for those who do, the following will be a guide:— Colours should be hoisted at 8 a.m., and hauled down at sunset. Should any flag officer be present, the time is taken from the senior officer, who should return all salutes. R_e_fore "colours" in the morning and after "colours" at sunset, the ensign and club burgee should be flown, whan entering port, and should be hauled down immediately on coming to an anchor. No guns should be fired for "colours except, by the boat giving the time, nor from "colours" at sunset until "colours the next morning. Flags should always be mast-headed before half-masting or before hauling them down. Saluting with the ensign half-mast, the ensign should be mast-headed first. Boats should always salute vessels of the British Navy by dipping the ensign once. A commodore, on entering port or coming to anchor, should be saluted by all his club boats present. Boats passing one another should exchange salutes by dipping the ensign once. Club burgees should be flown at the masthead, and ensigns at the peak, or when at anchor, on a flagstaff aft.
