ATHLETICS.

GAR LAW PARK SPORTS. KEEN CHOPPING EVENTS. Crack axemen from Australia and New Zealand, including the Australian treefelling champion, W. M. Johnson, competed in a cash athletic carnival at Carlaw Park on Saturday. Close cycling and running events contributed to an entertaining programme.

Reputed to be New Zealand's best axeman, D. Hoey, of Riverhead, was the only man on the scratch mark in the chopping events. The dice were loaded against him. On his way into Auckland from his home on Saturday, he lost from his lorry both his prize axes, which he had prepared for the occasion. Ho had to borrow axes, and his performances were naturally handicapped by having to use axes that were strange to him. However, he put up a splendid performance in the fourteen inch chop, the final event on the programme, which he won easily. Results were:— CYCLING EVENTS.
