U.S. CRUISER DAMAGED
Collision at High Speed With
British Tanker.
THREE LIVES LOST.
SAN FRANCISCO, October 25,
The cruiser Chicago was badly damaged in the collision yesterday with the British tanker Silver Palm in San Francisco harbour. The cruiser is one of the newest "in the Navy. The chief pay clerk, John Troy, was killed, Lieutenant H. A. MacFarland was missing, and his body was found subsequently, and Lieutenant F. S. Chapelle died later. A machinist, Joseph Ohlers, was seriously hurt. The collision occurred in a fog off Point Hur. A great hole was torn in the port side of the Chicago when the bow of the Silver Palm struck her forward of No. 1 turret, penetrated the armourplate and bored in almost amidships. The' cruiser's forward compartment below water filled. Both ships proceeded toward San Francisco. Naval officers say the ships apparently met when travelling at high speed. , •>
