MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS.
OBJECTIONS TO LEGISLATION.
Brief comment on the proposed Municipal Corporations Bill was made at last evening's meeting of the One Tree Hill Borough Council, as the result of a circular letter received from the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association. • From Press reports, the association's letter stated, it appeared that it was the intention of the Government to reintroduce the objectionable clauses re the amalgamation of boroughs. It was suggested that the council should communicate at once with the member for the district asking liim to oppose those clauses. 1 The town clerk, Mr. A. Leese, reported that clauses 2 and 3 of section 141 of the bill were the ones considered by the association to be objectionable. "Personally I became a little alarmed when I read that the bill was coming before the House in its present form and that the Government had no intention of altering the clauses- objected to," said the Mayor, Mr. I. J. Goldstine. After reading the Press reports, he said, he had immediately communicated with the Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Internal Affairs,, asking the Government's intention in the matter. The reply which he had received, although it had not been as satisfactory as he would have wished, had led him to believe that there were to be certain amendments. Those amendments were under consideration, and the council would have the opportunity of considering them later. As chairman of the Local Bodies' Association he had asked the secretary to circularise the local bodies. Prevention was better than cure. The council decided to communicate with Messrs. W. P. Endean and W. J. Jordan, M.P.'s, asking them to watch the position, and if the clauses objected to went forward in their present form to oppose them.
