PRODUCE FREIGHTS.
AUCKLAND-WELLINGTON.
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. A series of questions dealing with produce freight rates "between Auckland and Wellington were tabled in the House yesterday by the Hon. A. D. McLeod (Coalition Reform, Wairarapa). Mr. McLeod is making the following inquiries: — (1) Is it correct that special and unremunerative railway freight rates obtain between Auckland and Wellington respecting certain lines of dairy produce? (2) Is it correct that such unremunerative rates were granted as a result of the representations of Mr. W. Goodfellow, on the plea that it was desired to work up trade with the United States in dairy produce, and that no suitable shipping freight was available between Auckland and San Francisco? (3) Is it correct that, although practically no trade has been done in dairy produce with the United States as a result of the unremunerative rates granted, Mr. Goodfellow still uses the rates to carry on unfair trading through certain stores in which, it is stated, he is interested? (4) Will the Minister early inquire into the matter?
