AVONDALE WOMEN'S CLUB.
The Avondale Women's Club held a meeting in the Blockhouse Bay Hall on Tuesday afternoon, October 24, which was presided over by Miss Newton. After business had been dealt with, a long letter was read from Miss Jean Begg, containing much interesting information of her work with the Y.W.C.A. in Calcutta. Mrs. John Cooke gave an address on the humanitarian activities of the League of Nations, stressing the good work that it had done in regard to international health, and the steps taken to prevent the traffic in women and children in different countries. Mention was also made of the trade in opium and other dangerous drugs and the efforts of the league to make their smuggling unprofitable. The Children's Charter and the ideals of the International Labour Organisation were also explained', and it was pointed out that over COO labour laws had been passed, so that the conditions of work for children in Chinese match and silk factories and Persian carpet factories, etc., were greatly improved. Mrs. Cooke made an appeal to those present to interest themselves in the work of the League of Nations, which is the means of giving world-wide assistance in all matters of vital importance quite apart from negotiations to avert war. The speaker was heartily thanked for her enlightening address, and during tlio serving of afternoon tea many club members availed themselves of the opportunity of joining the League of Nations Union. Mrs. Davy gave two humorous sketches which were greatly appreciated.
