SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Count John McCormack, the famous Irish tenor, sang at the. wedding of his only daughter, Miss Gwendolyn McCormack, at Brompton Oratory, London, recently, writes a correspondent. Although only invited guests were allowed to enter the oratory, many people had remained inside since early Mass, at 0 a.m., and the building was packed to the doors. The vast congregation was hushed when Count McCormack rose to sing "Ave Maria," and they knelt or stood motionless as his voice floated through the oratory. Miss McCormaek's bridegroom was Mr. Edward Pyke, a Lancashire business man. * » • • The opening of the Mont Le Grande Croquet Club was attended and thoroughly enjoyed by a large number of members and visitors. Mrs. Peckham, the who wore a figured grey crepe de chine, swagger coat and cherry hat, welcomed the guests. Mrs. Badelcy, president of the A.C.A., spoke on behalf of the Auckland executive, and wished the club a prosperous season. Mr. McNab, the Mayor of Mount Eden, and Mrs. MeXab were among those who attended, the former making a happy impromptu little speech. Mr. Bush, president of the Balmoral Bowling Club, extended the good wishes of that club, and congratulated them on the excellent condition of the lawns. A musical comedy, "The Bo'sn's Bride," was presented to a very large audience in the Otahuhu Public Hall on Tuesday evening by the Howick-Paku-ranga Musical Society, the proceeds of which went to the Otahuhu Social Service and the Otahuhu Returned Soldiers' Associations. The comedy was produced by Mr. G. A. Newton and Miss EL M. Newton, with Mr. A. J. T. Judkins as the musical director, Mr. R. J. Wyman pianist, violinists Miss M. Strong and Mr. Burfield, and the 'cellist Mr. J. I. Whitehouse. The etage manager was Mr. P. Scholium, and the wardrobe and ballet mistresses 1 the Misses Casey, Newton, Tovey and M. L. White. The secretarial work was done by Mrs. Amiss, assisted by Miss M. L. White. The pretty frocks showed up to advantage in 1 the special lighting effects, especially in the ballets. An enjoyable social evening was held by tlio Australian Club last evening in the New Zealand League of Penwomen Clubrooms. Prior to tlio commencement of the social portion of the evening, a short business meeting was held to consider certain matters brought down by the general committee, and the most important decision arrived at by the club was that the entrance fee of 10/0 should be waived' until Deceml>er 31 next, meaning that members wishing to join from now till that date will only be charged the subscription of 10/6. Musical items were rendered by Mr. Eric Maxwell (piano solo), Miss Daphne Higham (violin solo), Mr. E. Munn (baritone), and Madame Eve Sharp (contralto). A one-act sketch entitled "Ici Parlo Fr.mcais," produced by Madame Amy Milburn, was then presented and met with an enthusiastic reception. The cast included Miss Owen Peacock, Miss Leila Armit.age, Miss Joyce Smith, Mrs. Spitilcy, Mr. M. Rattray, Mr. A. Beart, Mr. E. Middleton. The evening terminated with a light supper and a hearty vote of thanks to the artists contributing. ••• % • The Ngarua Tennis Club ball was a brilliant success, with a large attendance, and the arrangements were very successfully carried out. Extra«s were played by Miss Payne and Mr. A. Wotlierspoon. A waltzing competition was won by Mr. F. Smith and Miss J. Nicola, and a Monte Carlo waltz by Mr. H. Scott and Miss E. Harrett. Nichoils, sky blue taffeta. • « « • A successful plain and fancy dress ball was held on Labour Night in the Coronation Hall, Albany, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion with nikau ferns and coloured streamers. The winners of the fancy dress costumes were:—Fancy, Mrs. Vincent as lady of the harem, and Mr. Vincent as rajah; most original, Mrs. Morris as Duchess of Devonshire, and Mr. Gardiner as knight of old. During the evening a maxina competition was held, Miss R. Casey and Mr. Ray Thomas being the winners. Mrs. J. Day and Air. F. Bedford were the successful Monte Carlo winners.
