The word "vampire" was originally used to denote a dead person. It was /ormerly believed in various nations of Europe to return in body and s'oul, and wander about the earth sucking the blood of persons while'asleep. Hence the term, as applied to blackmailers and extortioners, or anyone who lives by preying iUpon others.
