SERIOUS DEFECTS IN MAINS.
NEW WRAPPED PIPES ORDERED.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. At the conclusion of the ordinary meeting of the Borough Council last evening an interim report was given by the consulting engineer to the municipal gasworks, Mr. H. W. Atkinson, of
Auckland, who is making an investigation into the serious yearly loss due to unaccounted for gas and matters affecting the general conduct of the works. Mr. Atkinson reported that he had already discovered several serious leaks in the gas mains and services, running into approximately 200,000 cubic feet per year. He recommended the immediate installation of new wrapped pipes where defects have occurred. The council decided to adopt the recommendations and authorise the carrying out of the work immediately. Mr. Atkinson wae also authorised to instruct the manager to take certain steps with a view to improving the quality of the gas. It is anticipated that the complete report will be received in about a fortnight, when a special meeting of the council will be convened to consider same.
