ADVENTURES OF HAMISH

AN INTERESTING COMPETITION. JIG-SAW PUZZLE ARRANGED TO-DAY. Dear Boys and Girls, The unusual adventures of Hamish quite intrigued Budget readers, scores of competitors attempting to fill in the blanks in the story. Although no one succeeded in supplying quite the correct solution, most entrants grasped the sense of the piece and chose words that conveyed much the same meaning. ■ Undoubtedly the best entry was submitted by Dorothy Perkins, twelve-year-old Devonport reader, who made only 15 mistakes. Enid Paris came second on the list, her paper containing 17 errors. The mysterious occupant of the secret cupboard is described as being "dressed in wide sailor trousers and sleeveless undershirt." Those who substituted the word "singlet" were credited with a full mark, whilst those whose entries read "sleeveless shirt" gained one half mark. Thus with 171 errors, Dorothy Arkell won the third place. Three competitors were only one half mark behind her, and these entries were awarded the fourth, fifth and sixth prizes. If patience is a virtue, as we are told in the old adage, then many Aucklanders must be very virtuous indeed. Great patience is required to piece together a jig-saw puzzle, yet I suppose there is not a reader of this page who has not puzzled over the task of fitting together the pieces of a cuc-up picture. Jig-saw puzzles, indeed, are the craze to-day. Budgetites are to have their very own jig-saw puzzle, for printed elsewhere on this page is a picture divided into many sections. For the most neatly reconstructed pictures cash prizes are offered, and in addition there are four special consolation prizes of splendid wooden jig-saws, consisting of about a hundred pieces that unite to make a coloured picture many inches square.
