SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Mercury Bay Croquet C)ub lield its official opening for the season 011 Saturday last, and a large ljunibor were present. Mrs. J. G. Browne, the president, thanked all for their presence, especially Messrs. T. L. C. Lowe and others for the erection of a new pavilion. Friendly games were played, and a delightful afternoon tea was partaken of supplied by the lady mem hers of the club. Among those present were: Mesdames Browne, Morjey, A. White, gutcliffe, Bfophy, Banister, Wprden, Ralph, Vickers, Minifie, L. White, Simpson, L. Lowe, Misses P. Browne, Lyon, Hinds and Topp. • » • W Cliildren's voices are always popular, and the school choir gave a pleasing selection of songs to the large audience wh|ch gathered in the Foresters' Theatre at Onehunga last Friday during the celebration of the school's diamond jubilee. Before leaving the plat fori'n* the children supplied the chorus for eongs by Mr. E. V. Sutherland, chairman of the jubilee committee, the headmaster, Mr. A, C. Rowe, acting as conductor and tjicn as pianist. Vocal solos were given by Madam Schubert, Miss Patti Schnackenberg, Messrs. Frank Sutherland, Ernest Marks and Peter Black, vocal duets by Misses Edwina Foote and Beryl Barker, violin solos by Mis§ Da pi) ye Jligl]am and Mr. J. Pelham, pianoforte solos by Mr. w. G. Staupe, recitations by Miss Madge Horn, and an' Eastern dance by Miss Peggy Naoll. The accompanists were Messrs. Len Elliott and W. G. Stoupe. The tables hail been tastefully decorated with bpwls of pale orange and lemon Iceland poppies, marigolds and asparagus fern. A dainty afternoon tea was served by | the committee, comprising the Mayoress, Mrs. H. T. Clements, and Mesdames J. 12, Gillies, ,H. C'app, A. M. Salt, W. J. Sefton, E. Cammelle, L. if. Webber, A. A splendid display was given in the Parish Hall last evening by the Otaliuhu G.F.S. Gymnasium Club, there being nearly 70 girls taking part. Mrs. Edelstcn led the in tire various drills, which were all smartly executed. A programme of excellent items was presented, as follows: March, G.F.S. Club; piano solo, Mrs. Mathews; free movements, senior girls; dancfe, Joan Fearnley; song, Phyllis Mathews; floor drill, junior girls; song, Zeala Boniface; wooden soldiers, senior girls; piano solo, Joyce Fdelsten; floor drill, senior girls; rcitation and ditklogue, Miss Gladys McLeod and Miss Trixie Parsons; Swedish drill, junior girls; song, F. Christian; club drill, senior girls; races and tableaux, senior and junior girls. The Rev. I?. J. Stanton, in presenting the prizes, thanked the girls and Mrs. Fdelsten for their interesting entertainment, and complimented them on their excellent work. The prize-winners were: Senior girls: CJub drill, Mss Zoe Feavnley, l;"otl)er drill, Miss Gladys Melyood. Junior girls: Drill, Kathleen Mears 1, Joan |Tparnloy 2. The evening concluded wjth an item by Miss Joan Morton and an exceptionally pretty lantern maze, in which the whole class took part. » » » # On' Saturday night the Ngamatea Hall, which was gaily decorated with streamers of orange, black and green, was filled when the members of the local institute held a successful dance. There were several novelty dances, the Monte Carlo being won by Miss Bain and Mr. Wpir, the spot waltz by Mrs. Ferry and Mr. Hutton, the hat waltjs by Mi's- Winks and Mr. Bell, and tlip musical parcel for ladies by Mrs. Perham, and'for gentlemen by Martin Kennedy. Two other prizes were wop by Mr. Ferry and Mr. Neilson. The ohi 1 - dren's musical parcel was won by Colin Greaves. During the evening a dainty supper was Served by the ladles.
