NEARING END.

WHEAT BOARD OPERATIONS. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The operations of the Wheat Purchase Board will be completed probably early in the New Year, according to a statement made by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, in the House yesterday. Mr. Forbes said circumstances had made it necessary that there should he some control over the purchases and sales of wheat, and the Government was aware of the nature of the decisions the board had made regarding sales of wheat to mills. The appointments to membership of the board were made on the recommendation of the existing wheat marketing organisation, and membership was not designed to give representation to various groups or factions. It was an essential feature of the wheat marketing scheme that finance should be available for the purchase from growers of the surplus, and it was available through millers purchasing early practical a full year's requirements. Millers could not undertake the heavy financial responsibility involved unless there were some control over both purchases and sales of wheat. Rationing of wheat to mills was therefore essential and unavoidable. The Prime Minister declared that the action which had. been taken was not contrary to law or in opposition to public policy.
