BYRD IN BED.
ACUTE LARYNGITIS
NEW YORK, October 17.
Rear-Admiral I\. E. Byrd, whoso two ships are now 011 their way to New Zealand, preliminary to an exploration trip in the Antarctic, is confined to bed in a hotel in Norfolk, Virginia, suffering from an acute attack of laryngitis, according to an announcement by Dr. Shirey, physician- to the expedition.
Dr. Shirey stated that if his condition had not improved by this afternoon, lie would call in other physicians for a consultation.
NEW PAPAL DELEGATE.
ARRIVAL IN AUSTRALIA.
PERTH, October 17. Among the passengers by the Orontes, which arrived at Freinantle from London to-day, was the new Papal delegate, Archbishop Bernardine, who brought a special message of greeting from the I Pope to Roman Catholics in Australia, j A large gathering of school children, \ carrying appropriate banners, gathered at the ship's side to welcome the archbishop. In an interview he said he would be very happy in Australia, where there is fu religious freedom. This seemed to be a privilege in the British Empire, where the relations between the various creeds wero more cordial than elsewhere, '
