FIGURES WANTED.

DISTRIBUTION CHARGES

ADVICE TO SOCIAL WORKERS

A statement that the members of the Social Workers' Association would do well to compile statistics showing the cost of the distribution of relief' was made by the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, at a meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Unemployment Relief Committee yesterday. The Mayor is chairman of the committee. , He was replying to Archdeacon Holbrook, who said that some of the social workers were perturbed at articles which had appeared and statements made regarding the cost of such distribution. He asked whether the Mayor, as a public accountant, would be prepared to carry out an investigation of the funds of the different social welfare bodies. The Rev. T. Ilalliday said that many of them prepared a balance-sheet but that the public should know the cost. Mr. Bart. Clark said lie thought that the remarks of the Mayor were directed at the Auckland City Mission. The Mayor: I did not refer to any bo<l 3'- .L Mr. Clark: No, but you meant the mission. He added that the cost of the mission's distribution would compare wit'i any other. In the last return the figure was 13.7 per cent. All inspection of the books would be welcomed. "I do licit want to run the Social Workers' Association," said the Mayor, "but the public is asked to give, and I think it is a duty to make known the percentage of money that is available for distribution." He added that in the case of the Metropolitan Committee, it had cost f 123 to distribute £13,100. 111 addition, of course, the committee had the services of three relief workers, as •well as of Mr. Grieve, who gave his services free, and the committee. Speaking of an article in the "Drifter," the organ of the Auckland City Mission, criticising the allocation of the money raised during Prosperity Week, Mr. Halliday, secretary of the Auckland Social Workers' Association, said that the association wished to dissociate itself from the opinions expressed in that article. Personally he felt strongly about it, and lie hoped that the chairman would read a statement from the association. The Mayor replied that it was really a matter for the trustees of Prosperity Week, and there was no need for the committee to discuss it. He felt sure that it would all end harmoniously.
