CAR DAZZLE.

TAVO VIEAVS FROM AMERICA. NEW HEADLIGHT PRODUCED. A now headlight said to give better visibility for night driving- was demonstrated in New York recently by its developer, Dr. B. B. Fortney, lighting engineer of Louisville, Kentucky. Explaining his principle, Dr. Fortney said:— "The 'inability to see in meeting an approaching headlipht is produced by the counteracting effect of tho brilliant approaching headlamp forming its imago upon the retina of the eye. The larger the headlight reflector, the greater will be the inability to see. Inversely, the smaller the light-emitting aperture, the smaller will be the image ot the luminous body upon the retina, and visibility •will increase in direct proportion to the diminution of the luminous bodies, regardless of the amount of light energy projected from the small aperture."

Solving the problem of headlight glare by lighting the car interior has been suggested by JO. Leavenwortli Elliott, one of the founders of the Illuminating Engineering Society and of the Society for the Conservation of Vision.

It is Mr. Elliott's opinion that the driver may reduce headlight glare by adapting his eyes to light of relative intensity. For this purpose, he says, tho car's ceiling should be painted white or a light colour and a simple system of indirect illumination arranged so that tho light is thrown against the ceiling.
