DENIAL GIVEN.
DISMISSALS FROM RAILWAY.
STATEMENT MADE IN OTACJO.
(By Telegraph.—rress Association.)
WELLINGTON, Sunday.
A definite denial of a statement telegraphed from Otago that dismissals in the Railways Department were on the increase, and that breaches of regulations formerly punished by fines and reductions were now met by instant dismissals, was given by the general manager of Railways, Mr. (t. H. Mackley, when spe-aking at a Railway Officers' Institute function last night.
' r I givo that statement an emphatic denial," said Mr. Mackley. "On behalf of Mr. Casey, myself and the Railway Board, I say definitely that so far as dismissals arc concerned, they have not increased since my assumption of office or since tho Raiiway Board took office, unless or except by reason of tho ftict that there has been an increase in serious irregularities committed by the Btafi."
Mr. Mackley said he had not ascertained the actual figures regarding dismissals, but if there had been an increase it was due to the aspect mentioned by him.
