AUCKLAND ROAD RACE. 100-MILE CHAMPIONSHIP. Riding particularly strongly over the last 10 miles .lack C. Dolores, of the Manukau Club, wont away from a big bunch to secure an easy victory by almost three minutes from R. C. Chappell in the 100 miles Auckland provincial amateur championship cycle road race held on Saturday. The Hlg race was controlled by the Auckland Amateur Cycling Centre. The course extended from Papakura to Ngaruawahia and back. The day was very warm and on the journey up to Ngaruawahia the riders had a following wind for the 50 miles, but the head wind on the return Journey proved too much for the majority of the riders. Dust on the 24 miles of metal surfaces was bad. The other 76 miles was over tarsealed surfaces.

There were 48 starters, and all bar one. W. Montford, who retired, favoured a freewheel device.

At the Ngaruawahia turn, which was ably patrolled by Waikato Club officials, the first rider to appear was G. Laurence, 50.0. He passed at 12.2 p.m. Hardly a minute behind was Gallagher, 43.0. Sel. Webster, K. Moshlem, .'!4.0, and W. Montford, 32.0 passed next 4.0 after the leader.

After an interval of 2.0 a bunch of nine passed with Clins. Clarke, W. Walker find B. Waugh the fastest in 2h ISm 40s for the 50 miles.

B. I). Andrews, l>. MeFarlane (riding a three-speed gear) nnd W. T. Lentfer, off 13.0, had collected in riders up to the 22.0 group and passed by with a bunch of 12 men, 25.30 after the leader. The IS.O trio took 2b 19m 55s and had lost ground to the 24.0 men. The throe scratch riders passed in a group. 35.0 after the leader and wero the fastest in 2h 10m 50s for the 50 miles.

As soon as the riders turned they struck a head wind for the remaining 50 miles, nnd when they reached the Te Knuwhata feeding stations, 70 miles, were glad to receive their cartons of drink. It was at this station that r,a;irence. who had ridden a great unpncerl race, retired. Just as he rode In n bunch of 18 riders, with Chits. Clarke, W. Walker, and B. Waugh, the fastest of the group, prominent.

This big bunch only lost six riders on the. 12-nille run to the Mercer feeding station at 82 miles.

On the Inst 18 miles of gruelling hill work over the Bombay Deviation, the leading bunch of 13 soon straggled out. Dolores took the lead near the top, with 10 miles to go. The last eight miles of metal saw many changes, Chappell nnd Morris displaced Moshiem nnd Melton, of Rotorua, on this last eight-mile, section of nietnl.

An enormous crowd had gathered at the finish to see J. C. Dolores come In first, after 100 miles of solid pedalling.

The fastest rider was Gordon Patrick, scr (Auckland Club), who beat Foubister in by two lengths to clock 5h 6m 335. FouhistPr was second fastest in nh 6m 345.

Lps Dwight. despite bis puncture, was third fastest in 5h 7m 465. R. Arvidsnn was next in 5h 16m 41s; then L. M. Nicholson. Jib 17m Is.

The ladles provided refreshments at the finish, and these were appreciated by the tiled ciders.
