NEW DIRECTOR.
N.S.W. State Conservatorium Of Music. MR. A. HILL MENTIONED. (Recciveil 12 noon.) SYDNEY, this day. The "Sydney Morning Herald" states that Mr. Alfred Hill, who is well known in New Zealand, will probably be the new director of the State Conservatorium of Music. Applications have been received from all over the world, but it is understood that Cabinet members will favour Mr. Hill, as he is an Australian.
Though frequently regarded as a New Zealander owing to his long connection with music in the Dominion, and with Maori music in particular,. Mr. Alfred Hill was born in Melbourne, though his father was for many years a well-known trader in Wellington. Mr. Hill graduated with honours at Leipzig Coneervatorium
in 1890, gaining the Helbig Prize. He was for four years conductor of the Wellington Orchestral Society, and was later conductor of the Auckland JUiedertafel and Orchestral Society. He composed the cantata "Hinemoa" for Wellington exhibition, and the opera "Tapu" (libretto Arthur Adams). He also produced an opera, "A Moorish Maid" m New Zealand and Sydney.
