PIRATE'S LOOT.
(By M .Vnsh, J4, PonsonUy Terrace,
Fonsonby, W. 1.)
"Let's play at pirates," I cried, as we rolled together on the lawn behind the largo hotel.
"And shall we use your fathers boat?" asked Tommy, sitting up with a jerk.
"Yes," I cried, and we scurried off toward the rippling water and the golden sand.
Soon we were pushing out a small green dinghy that lay overturned near the water. Ten minutes later we
"pirates" were cruising lazily among the many email boats which lay af. anchor.
"All we want to find now," said I, laughing, "is. a stately Spanish galleon carrying umpteen million pounds of treasure."
"Yes, and we will!" said Tommv, de terminedly.
Suddenly there came a long, whimpering bark, as though fro in some animal in distress. There it was again. "Wlierc was that?" asked Tommy, quickly.
,"It sounded as though it camo from over behind that boat," ! replied. In less than a minute we were cruising slowly about tile spot I had indicated, but there was no sign of our "prey." Then Tommy said, "There—looli!" And I turned my eyes iri the direction in which lie pointed. , There, in the water, I saw a small terrier, struggling feebly to keep its head above water, sinking every now and then, and coming up again for breath. It was plain to us that the poor creature could not survive much longer, and so wo "cleared for action." A few swift strokes brought us to the animal's side. Willing hands hauled it into the boat, and with a grateful bark the poor tiling collapsed into Tommy's lap.
We brought it home, fed it arid looked after it until it had recovered from the shock, and, as Tommy afterwards said, "that find was better than any silly old galleon."
And hecanse he was our only prey, wc called him "Pirate's Loot."
