BILL BARWICK.
Tasmanian Fails at Two-Mile
Record Run
Bill Barwick (Tasmania) intends to start in the Australian championships at Adelaide, and hopes to lower his own Australian record for the mile of 4.17.
He is particularly keen to vindicate his selection in tho last Australian Olympic team, and his ambition is to secure inclusion in the Australian team for tho Empire (James. On the times he has recorded on tho comparatively slow courses in Tasmania this season Barwick has established himself as one of tho outstanding long distance runners in Australia, and 011 fast tracks bigger honours should not be beyond his capabilities.
Barwick made an attack on the two miles record of the world, held by the famous Finnish athlete Paavo Xurmi, at llobart, recently, on the Ascot trotting track. Unfortunately it rained heavily during the preceding night, and a light drizzle fell throughout the clay, with the consequence that the track was slow and holding.
Nevertheless, Barwiek lowered hotli the Australian aiul Australasian records, although not the world's record, which would have been a physical impossibility under tho conditions. His time was 0.18 3-5, against Nurmi's time of 8.59 3-5. Tho Australasian record, established by R. A. Rose, of New Zealand, was 0.20 1-5, and the Australian record, established by A. Shrubb, of England, at Sydney, in 1005, was 0.33 3-5.
Barwiek was well satisfied with the time recorded under the conditions in which he ran, and it might be said with safety that on a really fast track his time would have been several seconds faster. He is at the peak of his form now, and should bo the centre of attraction at tho next Australian championships.
