OFFICIAL OPENINGS

Good Start for Season.

Those clubs which were earliest on the programme for official openings were particularly fortunate in the conditions which ruled for their opening ceremonies, a number of which took place to-day. A succession of warm, dry days had put the greens in much better condition than is usual so early in the season, while tlio genial, summer-like atmosphere was precisely the kind that bowlers would have ordered. There were in consequence large attendances at all the oilicial functions, which were successfully conducted with the usual eclat. WAITEMATA CLUB. The official opening of the Waitemata bowling and croquet lawns at Nortlicote took place this afternoon in the presence of a large number of members and visitors. The greens were in good order. Tlie president, Mr. F. G. Black-well, welcomed the visitors and referred to the prestige of tlie players in the Auckland competitions. The Auckland Bowling Centre was represented by Mr. .T. W. Mis. Blackwell, wife of the president, threw the first jack, and the first howl was played by Mr. David Elston, the oldest foundation member of the club. 1 TE PAPAPA CLUB. The To Papapa Bowling Club opened its season to-day in the presence of a large crowd. The greer: was In splendid order. ROCKY NOOK. The well-known greens at Rocky Nook were looking wonderfully attractive this afternoon when a record crowd numbering about 300 assembled for the official opening. The visitors included representatives from practically all the leading city and suburban clubs, with Mr. Sid Coldicutt representing the centre. The president. Mr. \V. Ougliton, welcomed the visitors and the patron, Sir Geo. Fowlds, presented a shield of the executive officers to the outgoing president, Mr. J. Pearce.
