RUGBY CLUB FINALISTS
Three Teams Level — Marist, University and Ponsonby—May Be Bracketed as Winners— Ponsonby Wilt Under Marist Attack — Tall Scoring at Eden Park—Wins To Grafton, Grammar, Manukau and 'Varsity.
After to-day's play three teams —Marist, Ponsonby and University—are again level witli 26 points cach at the top of the Auckland Rugby Union's championship ladder. Although no definite statement was made, it was suggested by the chairman of the management committee, Mr. H. hrost, that the three teams might be bracketed as championship winners. If that course is not taken, it will take two Saturdays to play the matches off, and the games would have to be played at either the Showgrounds or Western Springs Stadium, for to-day was the last day of the year of Rugby Union control of Eden Park.
Marist scored an impressive victory over Ponsonby in the big match of the day at Eden Park, and in the second spell Ponsonby were overwhelmed. University scored a runaway victory over College Rifles in the curtain-raiser, Bush, moved up from full-back, having a day out in the five-eighths line. Grammar always held command in their match with Training College, while at the Showgrounds Manukau beat Technical College Old Boys in an uneventful match by one point. Otahuhti made a game effort in the second spell to stave off defeat, but Grafton triumphed.
