"HEAVY WEATHER,"
A NEW WODEHOUSE. Mr. P. G. Wodehouse goes on doing it again and again, but in "Heavy Weather" (Herbert Jenkins), the weather is a little heavier than usual. Not that Mr. Wodehouse's wit and humour show any falling off, but that tho book is unusually long, ■ tlio stage slightly overcrowded, and the pace of the fun rather forced. Our advice is to read this country houso farcical romance of peers and pigs, cherubic-looking idle young men, pretty girls and lorgnetted women, but to read it bit by bit. A few pages at a time are an excellent restorative in these difficult times. There is something in nearly every page.
When Ronald Fish, the last of the Fishes, only son o£ Lady Julia Fish, and nepliow to Clarence, ninth Karl o£ Kmsworth, had announced that . a marriagq had been arranged and would shortly take place between himself and a unit of the ltegal Theatre chorus, he had had what might bo called a mixed Press. Some of the notices were good, others not.
"Trustees are tough eggs," said Monty thoughtfully. "I had one till I was twentylive, and it used to take me weeks of patient spade-work to extract so much as a tenner from the man."
He looked like something out of a symbolic group of statuary—Good Citizenship Refusing To Accept A Bribe From Big Business Interests In Connection With The Contract, For The New Inter-urban Tramway System, or something of the kind.
The sack, it seemed to him, was hovering in the air. Almost he couid hear the beating of its wings.
And one makes a mental ijotc of such tliing-s as "1 am the sort of man my father used to warn mo against." Now, after many years, justice is beginning to bo done to Mr, Wodehouse's style. There is no easy writing about it, but it is easy reading.
