A number of the new white felt hats made their first appearance and added to the general effect of spring brightness. The narrow flower borders around the courts were gay with purple violas, while against the green fence Iceland poppies, with the sun shining through their brilliantly coloured petals, seemed to glow with light. The oak trees in the Domain, with their new green leaves; the sun shining oil and through them made a perfect background for the green pavilions. The sharp impact of tennis racquet and ball, the voice of the scorer mellowed by a microphone, and the sharp, resounding bursts of applause, were the only sounds to break the silence. In the club pavilion tea had been arranged for the visitors and the committee of the Auckland Lawn I Tennis Association.
