REGATTA OF 1881.
Amongst the news items about the Anni» versarv Regatta of January 29, 1881, the "Star" mentions that Mr. Adams will Work a totalisator aboard the llags.hip, the Lady Jocelyn. The contestants in the yacht race un<ler six tons were Lala, Jessie Logan, Volante and Toy. Mr. H. J. Ellis was lion, secretary. The "Star" in a leading article says that there is something more to be gained by the perpetuation of these aquatic tournaments than a mere day's sport. This is a country endowed with all the elements lieeessary to achieve maritime greatness, and we ought to encourage the development of those tastes and skill on the water. Future regattas will be vastly different to that of to-day, just as the regatta of ISBI is superior to the celebration of 1852, when Colonel Wynyard's Mermaid beat Captain Daldy's Wave and Dr. Pollen's Kawau.
The chairman foi' the 1881 regatta was Captain D. H. McKcnzie. The committee was Messrs. W. Buchanan, T. Niccol, J. B. Graham, H. F. Anderson, R. E. Isaacs, M. Gallagher. D. Couk, C. C. Dacre, J. Bennett. G. Harper, A. E. Whitaker and J. McKcnzie.
The Sovereign, 85 tons, W. H. Brown, won the champion schooner race, £100 first prize, Torea, E. Mitchelson, being second. Hattie May, T. D. Halstead, won the first open boat race; Mayflower, J. Harrison, second. Jessie Logan, J. Ansenne, won the yacht race under six tons, with Toy, J. C. Bindin second, and Lala, A. Buchanan, third. The second open boat race was won by Shrimp (Hewand Melville), and the third by Madgie (J. Biglow).
