NO INCREASE.
TAXATION RATES.
RE-ENACTMENT OF SCHEDULE
assessments ready. (By Telegraph.—l'a rl in men tnry Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Although there is to be no reduction in taxation this year, there is some consolation in the knowledge that there will be no increases. Parliament on Tuesday will be asked to pass at the sitting the Annual Taxing Bill, which will re-enact the schedules of land and income tax approved by Parliament last year. The measure will be accorded urgency to enable the Royal Assent to be obtained by Wednesday night.
Without the authority of this legislation the Land and Income Tax Department would be powerless to issue its assessments for the year. These are now ready to lie sent to taxpayers, and the dispatch of the first instalment will follow hard on the heels of Wednesday's enactment. Thus about two months will be available for tile lodgment of objections before the issue of the demands in January.
When the House last session was considering the imposition of the bachelor and spinster tax, the lit. Hon. .7. 0. Coates, Minister of Finance, undertook to inquire during the recess into the question of' exemptions, having in mind possible cases of hardship of single' people who were the sole support of their families. It is understood some of the information required is now in tlie possession of the Minister, but it is not known what action lie intends to take.
