SCHOOL BOXERS.

KING'S COLLEGE TOURNEY. CHAMPIOXSHTPS DECIDED. Sonic splendid boxing was witnessed at the King's College annual tourney, which concluded in the school gymnasium last Saturday evening, when the semi-finals and finals were decided. Some of the bouts -were very bright and interesting, but in several canes it was quite apparent that proper attention had not been given to training. During the evening, a three rounds exhibition bout was fought between Archie Hughes, ex-New Zealand professional lightweight champion, and Frank Bruno, former holder of the' Xew Zealand flyweight amateur title. Mr. Georgo Aldridge, secretary of the Xew Zealand Boxing Council, who was making a flying visit to Auckland, after having seen the recent Xew Zealand amateur contests at Xelson, was preeent, and favourably commented upon the good standard shown. As on the previous night, Sir. Xeil McLean acted as referee and judge. Results:— Feather-weight. — Semi-final: . H. G. Jenkins (6.5) beat D. Andrews (0.4). Final: Jenkins beat F. W. Willis (6.7).. A splendidly contested bout, there being very little between them at the finish. Rounds one and three were even, Jenkins putting on his winning points in round two. Bantam-weight.—Semi-final: G. J. Taine (7.8) beat E. C. Roberton (7.7). Final: Taine -beat D. Finlayson (7.8). The loser's defence was bad and he put no weight into his punch. Taine gave a good display, scoring freely with right lippercuts and an occasional straight left to the'head. Lightweight.—Semi-finals: C. A. McOruther (8.7) beat R. H. Parker. (8.5); R. T. Malyon (8.0) beat H. F. Willis (8.0). Final: McGruther beat Malyon. The winner was very aggressive in the opening round and had Malyon groggy on the ropes at the gong. The spell revived Malyon, and he-came out to make a great recovery. Rounds two and three were fought on even terms, but McGruther had piled up too many points in round one. Welter-weight.—Semi-finals: McGruther (9.6) beat R. D. Bamford (0.10). In the other semi-final A. D. Jacobs (0.7) was to have met K. W. de Montalk , (9.4). but the latter could not go into the ring, as lie broke a thumb in his fight with W. V. Mathers on. the previous evening. Jacobs fought a tiring bout with T. R. A. Davis (10.0). Final: Jacobs beat McGruther. Jacobs' longer reach aii'l heavier punch.wore the loser down. Jacobs lias a good style, but flounders around the ring too much. He only needs some decent coaching to become a good boxer. Middle-weight.—Semi-finale: B. B. S. Catran (10.0) beat R. H. Pope (10.0); G. R. Everitt (10.3) beat P. Savage (9.13). Final: Catran beat Everitt. Catran was outstanding in this class. He adopted whirlwind ( tactics, and gained technical k'nock-out decisions in the first round of both bouts. Heavy-weight.—Final: K. Moses (11.0) beat H.. L. G. Macindoe (10.12). Macindoe stepped from his corner ahead on points at the beginning of the second round, but Moses connected early with two heavy punches to the head. Maeindoc went to the mat and took the count for nine on both occasions. On rising for the third time he was very groggy, and Moses was given a technical knock-out verdict. The winner was the better fighter at close quarters, and in his eagerness to get in close, lie clinched frequently. His winning punch is <a heavy right. Macindoe is a long-range fighter, and would probably have won if he could have countered his opponent's in-fighting tactics. F. W. Willis, who was defeated by 11. G. Jenkins in the final of the featherweight,, and R. T. Malyon, who lost the decision to t'. O. McGruther in the.. bantam final, were awarded .special trophies for being the two best losers. I
