SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A social_gX the Order of the Eastern Star was held on Saturday at Renall Street Hall, Ponsonby. The evening was spent in old-time, modern and Scottish dances. The music for the Scottish dances was supplied by the bagpipes played by Messrs. D. Ferguson and C. Amor. * * * » Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Godfrey presided over a meeting of the Te Awamutu branch of the Women's-Division. A book drive resulted in a splendid response, and these go towards the formation of a library for branch members. Mrs. Hopping and Mrs. Ashton took part in a sketch. Appreciation was extended to Mrs. Ross, of Hamilton, whose demonstration on loose chair covers, interior renovating, remodelling furniture and distempering were all most useful. The Mangapiko members dispensed afternoon tea.

A coming of age party was held in Russell on the 25th in honour of Mr. Ronald Clow, son of Mrs. Clow. Coinpetitions and dances were enjoyed and congratulatory speeches were given by Mr. Monro and Mr. George. Among the guests were: Misses Zita Bissct, Nancy Bissct, Audrey Gibbs, McTavish, Adele Neumann and M. Neumann, MeMinn, Mitchell, Emmett (Kawakawa), King, Baucher, Nankivel, Betty English and Gwen English.

The successful candidate in the school queen competition in aid of the Birkenhead dental clinic was Miss Dorothy Foley, the' representative of the Albany school. In order that the smaller schools should not be placed at any disadvantage the votes were recorded on a percentage basis, in proportion to the roll number of each school. The coronation of the queen-elect will take place on Saturday afternoon at the Northcote High School grounds, where a carnival is to be held.

The Mangcrc Central Tennis Club's dance, held in the Mangere Central Hall on Saturday evening in connection with the official opening of its courts, proved a great success. Mrs. Ashby also read reports of the attitude of various denominations towards the liquor traffic. The fair was opened bv the president, Mrs. H. Craig, and Mrs. H. T. Clements, the Mayoress of Otahuhu, was present. The hall was beautifully decorated with bowls of lovely Iceland poppies, anemones, ranunculus and stock. There were two stalls, produce and cakes, the former being in charge of Mrs. IT. Craig and Mrs. W. Absolum and the latter in the hands of Mrs. 11. Colson. Mesdames (i. Simons, C. Bisman, Linder and S. Harrie attended to the afternoon tea arrangements. '» » # • The Otahuhu Returned Soldiers' Association held its annual social last Thursday evening, when the Public Hall, Papatoetoe, was decorated appropriately with streamers, flags, and war souvenirs. Mr. J. Kitto and Mr. C. Wagstaff were in charge of the programme, consisting of dancing and cards. Vocal solos were given by Mr. H. S. Rcnolds, accompanied by Mrs. Barker, and during the evening tho 500 present joined enthusiastically in singing some of the "Digger" songs. The programme was carried through in military style, with bugle calls and mess orderlies. The success of the evening was due largely to the work of the ladies' committee, consisting of Mesdames C. Wagstaff, J. Kitto, C. Winstanley, R. Closcy and Fielden. Novelty dances were won by Miss Cunnold and Mr. E. An enjoyable china evening was given by Mrs. and .Miss Stubbs on Saturday at their residence, Wapiti Avenue, Epsom, to Miss Beach Hardie Xeil. Mrs. Stubbe was gowned in bronze georgette and angel skin lace. Miss Stubbs wore beige lace and georgette over flame satin, and Miss B. I Hardie Xeil wore bine and silver I embossed georgette. Birkenhead on Saturday afternoon, which was opened hv the .Mayor, Mr. George Mills, resulted in £23 being raised in support of the local queen candidate, Miss Sybil Norton, in the competition in aid of the Birkenhead dental clinic. The entertainment included a musical programme by the I Birkenhead borough band, displays by J the Zion Hill Gymnasium Club, under Mr. Trevor Roberts, the juniors being under Mr. W. Pike; folk dancing by the children; a mock Court, besides numerous side-shows. The afternoon tea arrangements were in charge of the Birkenhead Women's Association.
