BOY DROWNED.
HAWKE'S BAY. BEACH MISHAP
ENDEAVOUR TO AVOID WAVE
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
HASTINGS, Sunday
A sad drowning accident occurred at Haumonna Beach, seven miles from Hastings, at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, when William Kershaw, aged three years, lost his life.
The boy was visiting the heaeli with his parents and four other children, and was playing at the mouth of the Tukituki River -when a large wave was seen to approach him. Some fishermen near by shouted a warning to him. He stepped back to avoid the wave, but fell into the river, which was running very swiftly.
A man jumped into the water to save the boy, but his efforts were of no avail, the child being swept past him and out of sight. Search parties scoured the beach until 10 o'clock last night, when the body was found a mile from the mouth of the river.
