HAWKE'S BAY TOUR.

DEFEATED BY SOUTH AUCKLAND. At Ngaruawahia yesterday before a good crowd for that part of the Lower Waikato, the Hawke's Bay touring team was beaten comfortably to the tune of 31 points to 6 by the South Auckland representative thirteen, which provided a fine exhibition of the code. ~ The visitors on arrival were met by JVir. R. T. Hill, president of the South Auckland League, and were extended a hearty welcome by the Mayor, Mr. Richard Eyre, who also kicked off at the match. Both teams missed chances at the start, but after 15 minutes a clever rearguard action, in which G. and W. Tittleton and B. Paki featured, enabled Hill to cross wide out for South Auckland. The home side continued to make the play and from splendid handling by the forwards H. Mason scored and G. Tittleton this time goaled. A back movement ended with Hill reversing to Paki to Mcßurney to score, the same player soon after again materialising, G. Tittleton converting a goal, making the Waikato men 16 points up at the interval. The Bay team made a better showing in the second half, but the effort petered out, Timms, Paki and Fleming, in turn scoring. The visiting backs, with their forwards breaking faster, took a turn, and, at the end of a loose rush, R. E. bmitn scored and made a fine attempt with the J kick. South Auckland 25, Hawke's Bay. 3. The Bay defence had considerably improved and exciting runs by G. Tittleton and Nesbit and a drop-shot at goal by K. Smith preceded tries froin the loose by Trautvettor and Nesbit. Brilliant South Auckland combination produced another try by Paki and the final figures were: South Auckland 31 Hawke's Bay 6

Mr. A. Williams was referee. Although the Hawke's Bay side gave an improved display upon that against Auckland, it was unable to cope With the more experienced opposition. Outstanding of the visitors was the nimble and fast little fullback McLean, who consistently aroueea approbation for his elusive running and fie ding. Exeter at first five-eighths defended well, but kicked far too much. Behind an inferior set of scrummers (for H. Brady won a fair share of the ball), the backl well fed by the heady halfback, Andrews, were unable effectively to collaborate. The three-quarter line lacked speed and sparkle, Seal at centre being too slow. The winners teamed m a mosl delightful manner, and, judging by their present form, should make a great game of It against Auckland in the return match at the week-end. South Auckland has weight and speed and undoubtedly is n better shape than, when it beat the mptvcmolitan elect earlier in the season. &. Trttleton at full-back, starred but even iore impressive was the Hβ**'*- ™£d three-quarter work of Paki. who has iiaa a commendable career in the code McBurnTy was prominent of a fine sextet of mcknien who handled the ball like backs. P The Hawke's Bay men, who ast evening wei-e the guests of the Taupiri Club at Ta iDiri left Ngaruawahia this morning on the ?etnrn journey to Napier, via Rotorua, Wairakei and Taupo.
