MR. FORBES' "IF."

OMISSION OF WORD. CABLE FROM UNITED STATES. SUCCESS OF ROOSEVELT PLAN. (By Telegraph.— Tiese Association.) j WELLINGTON.'this day. i A further statement wr.e issued by the acting-Prime Minister, the Kt. Hon. J. G. Coates, to-day, in regard to the recent cable, from the Prime Minister, the lU, Hon. G~. W. Forbes, asking him to contradict certain statements wrongly attributed to him Ly some sections'of the American Prpae. Mr. Coatos Kive that a cable message received to-day from Mr. Forbes shows how it is to change the whole purport of a remark ny the omission of one word, in this case the word "if." In his cable Mr. Forbes says: "Statement on KooUevelt code attributed to me is incorrect and'should read as follows: 'I am confident that if his programme of reconstruction is successful in returning prosperity to the United States it I will have a beneficial effect on the I remainder of the civilised world.'" Mr. Forbes adds that it is absurd to suggest that he expressed any opinion regarding the efficacy or otherwise of the National Recovery Act. Even its most ardent supporters are only hopeful and by no means convinced of the success. The plan brie'tles with difficulties and is not yet sufficiently advanced to allow any judgment to be formed. By way of comment Mr. Coatos eaye ho can state frd:n his own experience in the States that certain Press statements cannot always be received in full confidence that they are correct. Such instances of misreporting are by no means isolated.
