IMPROVEMENT SHOWN. POVERTY BAY DISTRICT. BUILDING SUBSIDY A BOON. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, this day. , Since the inauguration of the Unem-' ployment Board's building subsidy scheme permits have been issued in Gisborne for the erection of buildings estimated to cost £60,000, which is nearly 25 per cent more than the total involved in all building operations during the whole of 1032. Most of the work is in the borough of Gisborne, but several country jobs are included, the operations varying from email renovating jobs to comparatively large buildings, including two new theatres. The fact that during the month of August both the Gisborne Borough Council and the Cook County Council collected considerably larger amounts in respect of current year's rates is accepted 'by officers of those bodies as evidence that there is at least some easing in the financial conditions. Of the total rate of £60,767 struck in the borough, £37.-428, or 61 i per cent, was paid in time to receive the rebate of 5 per cent. At the corresponding date last year, with approximately the same total levied, only 43 per cent was received, although the same concession was offered. More than one-quarter of the total rates were paid during the last two daye of the month. The Cook County this year offered a 5 per cent rebate, instead of 3J per cent, as formerly. The result was that of £30,000 struck £11,381 was collected during August, compared with £6902 out of £20,300 last year, or 37J per cent this year, compared with 23J per cent last year.
