RADIO SOLOS.
JUDGE COMMENDS STANDARD. TALENT IN NEW ZEALAND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Commenting on the radio test for lady vocalists at the Wellington competitions this evening the judge, Dr. Cyril Jenkins, said it was a novel way of hearing competitors as the microphone magnified vocal weaknesses, but did not do the same with virtues. The standard of the performances was very high, the winner of the solo for ladies, Mrs. Russell Scoular, of Wanganui, being exceptionally good. Dr. Jenkins said he was glad to feel that the standard was so high, as it meant there was a wealth of material in New Zealand which could be used by the Broadcasting Board. There was no need to depend on mechanical instruments when ladies revealed talent of such high order. The result of the solo for ladies was: Mrs. Russell Scoular, Wanganui, 90 points, 1; Miss Kathleen Sawyer, Te Iloro, 85 points, 2. The result of the men's solo over the air was: Mr. Ray Trewern, Wellington, 79 points, 1.
