DEMAND FOR BACON
IN BRITISH MARKET. DOMINION URGED TO EXPAND. COMPETITION WITH DENMARK (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. An indication of the strength of Danish bacon on the British market was given by Mr. Eliot Davis, of Auckland, in addressing the New Zealand Cooperative Pig Marketing Association's annual meeting yesterday. Mr. Davis, who recently returned from England, where he investigated the pork industry, made an eloquent appeal to New Zealand farmers to increase pig meat production and imprnvc quality and marketing methods with a view to invading successfully the Danish stronghold. Last year, be said, Britain's bacon imports were valued at £33,000,000, of which Denmark sent £21,000.000 and New Zealand only £310,000, or 1.5 per cent. Mr. Davis considered that Britain got the worst of the trading agreement with Denmark, which started on July 1. Denmark got free entry for its bacon and ham, and was asked to reduce supplies by only (i per cent. The price of Danish bacon in London six weeks ago was 92/, compared with 53/ 12 months ago. It would therefore be realised that although they were sending less produce they were getting a higher price. "There is an enormous unsatisfied demand for bacon throughout England," added Mr. Davis. "With your natural advantages, which are not shared by the Danes, and with true co-operation, there is no reason why the pig industry here should not be exceedingly profitable." The speaker emphasised' the fact that remarkable uniformity of quality, coupled with weekly price* fixation aiid marketing through one organisation, were the main reasons why the Danes held their position. Mr. Davis also urged greater development of the egg trade.
Warm appreciation was expressed of Mr. Davis' address.
