SUPPLY PROBLEMS.
EAST TAMAKI ' VIEWS. . CX3UNCIL .PLAN"'. CRITICISED.. Opposition to the formation of a milk council on any basis that would retain the former eostly methods of city distribution, under .which the public was penalised. without any additional return being given to the farmers, was contained in resolution, passed at a meeting of suppliers, to the East Tamaki cheese factory and town milk supply on Wednesday ■ evening. . , It was the opinion of the meeting that past" experience, proved . that dear milk; to the public did not. necessarily imply high returns to the..producers. Legislative . authority would '.only be essential to' fix a minimum iprice to the farmer. A true ..cq-operative system of distribution would involve a. pooling of interests, and would be beneficial to the public, vendors, and farmers alike. There would be no need for. legislation if the: producers concerned in town milk supply and | the vendors would • undertake to place -the industry in order through a ; systematic method of block distribution. On those lines the East Tamaki group — embracing Mangere, Pakuranga, West and East Tamaki— had operated with success. A resolution embracing those- views was carried unanimously. Co-operative Cartage. A scheme for the introduction of a co-operative system of cartage of milk for town supply and the cheese factory at East Tamaki was endorsed by the meeting. It was explained that tenders had been called for cartage on all routes for delivery of all milk supplied either for the city or for the' cheese factory. Delivery would be "undertaken 'twice daily as required. Tenders- were considered by the meeting and contracts let. It was stated that as a result of the co-operative cartage system it would be possible for all the milk produced by., the group, -approximately 3,000,000 gallons, to be carted from farm to destination, whether city or factory, at a cost' of about 3-8 d a gallon. That was about 40 per cent lower than the rate obtaining under the group's method of last year. The new system was to be introduced as from fp-day. A report submitted stated that the group was now ■ supplying over 15,000 homes.
